Fontana Village: the 1942-44 Manhattan Project worker town
Fontana Village Resort isn''t a generic mountain resort, it''s the 1942-44 TVA worker town built to house the dam crews who powered Oak Ridge''s uranium enrichment for the atomic bomb. The Tennessee Valley Authority constructed Fontana Dam under wartime urgency to feed Oak Ridge K-25 and Y-12 with hydroelectricity; the worker housing became Fontana Village after the war.
Sharing the village with Appalachian Trail thru-hikers
The Appalachian Trail crosses the top of Fontana Dam, and the famous "Fontana Hilton" (the 24-person deluxe shelter that''s arguably the best-equipped A.T. shelter from Georgia to Maine) sits on Nantahala National Forest land near the dam, a couple of miles from the resort rather than on its grounds.
Government photo ID required regardless of age
Furry Takeover requires a government-issued photo ID at check-in for ALL attendees regardless of age, the minimum attending age is 13, but every badge holder, including minors, must present ID. Lodging is also booked separately through Fontana Village Resort (1-800-849-2258) with a 3-night minimum at any rate and a 1-night non-refundable deposit, the con doesn''t hold the room block on the attendee''s behalf.
