Reference Sheets 101

What is a Reference Sheet?

A "ref sheet" is the most important image for your fursona. It serves as the definitive guide for artists to draw your character correctly.

A good reference sheet should be flat colored (no shading) and clearly show important details like markings, accessories, and colors.

What to Include

  • Views: Front, back, and (optionally) side view
  • Color Palette: Swatches of every color used on your character
  • Details: Zoom-ins on eyes, paws, tail, or complex markings
  • Info: Name, species, gender, and personality traits

Need a Ref Sheet?

You don't need to be an artist! You can commission one (see below) or use a "Free to Use" (FTU) base. Many artists provide lineart bases that you can color yourself.

Pro tip: Search "FTU furry reference sheet base" on Twitter or DeviantArt!
