Did You Know?

  • *Port Talbot Parkway station receives direct London Paddington trains in about three hours.

Aberacon is the only furry convention in Wales, held at a beach hotel on the Aberavon seafront in Port Talbot. Run by the WelshFurs community, it grew from a free one-day gathering in 2024 into a full weekend convention, and it is bilingual from top to bottom: every public page, and much of the programming, runs in both English and Welsh.

2026: Glywysing

The 2026 edition runs 28-30 August under the theme "Glywysing", named for the early medieval Welsh kingdom that covered this part of the south-east coast. The convention's own invitation sets the tone: "a wild land in the west, where bards roam, singing of dragons, and dragons roam, singing of bards. Where King Arthur's knights hunt a magical boar, and the hounds of Annwn hunt souls." It draws on the Mabinogion rather than on generic fantasy, which is of a piece with a convention that treats the Welsh language as a first-class part of the event.

Registration is closed. Weekend passes were £70, a single day £50, and a sponsor pack £90; there is no super sponsor or patron tier. The convention caps registration at 150 places plus staff, and it is running a waiting list by email at [email protected] for anyone hoping for a returned place. Artists' and Authors' Alley applications and staff applications are also closed.

The 2026 charity is Maesteg Animal Welfare Society, a small volunteer-run rescue for lost, stray and abandoned cats and dogs in the surrounding area. The convention collects donations across the weekend and runs a charity auction; items can be handed in at ConOps on the Friday or Saturday.

Why Attend?

Aberacon is small on purpose. A cap of 150 places means it is closer to a large gathering of friends than to a convention floor, and it is the kind of event where you will plausibly meet most of the people there over a weekend. That scale is the appeal, particularly for anyone who has found the bigger UK conventions overwhelming.

The bilingual commitment is the other thing that sets it apart, and it is not decorative. Every public page carries a parallel Welsh translation, and the 2026 theme is built on Welsh mythology rather than borrowed from elsewhere. For Welsh speakers this is the one furry convention that treats the language as native to the event rather than as a novelty.

Then there is the setting. The venue is the largest building on the seafront, and Aberavon's beach is one of the longest in Wales, a Blue Flag stretch with three miles of promenade, bars and parks beside it. On a clear day the view runs across Swansea Bay to the Mumbles. Few conventions put a beach that size directly outside the front door, which makes it unusually good for fursuit photography.

What Are the Highlights of Aberacon?

  • The only furry convention in Wales, run by the WelshFurs community and drawing from across the south-west of the country.
  • Genuinely bilingual, with every public page and much of the programming carried in both English and Welsh.
  • A beach-hotel venue on Aberavon seafront, one of the longest Blue Flag beaches in Wales and a rare outdoor suiting backdrop.
  • Deliberately small, with registration capped at 150 places plus staff, which keeps it closer to a gathering than a convention floor.
  • Welsh mythology themes, with 2026's "Glywysing" drawing on the Mabinogion, King Arthur's knights and the hounds of Annwn.
  • A consistent charity record, raising funds for the Maesteg Animal Welfare Society animal rescue across recent editions.

How Do I Get to Aberacon?

By train: Port Talbot Parkway is the closest station, on the South Wales main line with Cardiff to Swansea services calling there. Walking up from the platform, turn left before the cafe for the taxi rank and the bus station.

By bus: the nearest stop is "Princess Margaret Way", served by the number 82 between Port Talbot Bus Station and the Sandfields estate. Get off there and continue up Princess Margaret Way to the hotel.

By car: the convention's own advice is blunt, that the M4 or the A48 are your only realistic options because every other route involves going over a mountain. From Swansea and west Wales leave the M4 at junction 41; from Cardiff and east Wales leave at junction 38 onto the A48. Both then follow signs for "Aberavon Beach / Traeth Aberafan" and "Hollywood Park / Parc Hollywood". Parking at the hotel is subject to availability, with further paid parking at Hollywood Park and Bay View.

By air: the nearest commercial airports are Cardiff (CWL) and Bristol (BRS), both reachable by public transport, and as the convention drily notes, neither is actually in the city it is named after.

Where Should I Stay for Aberacon?

The convention is held at the Best Western Aberavon Beach Hotel on The Princess Margaret Way (SA12 6QP), the largest building on the seafront, with 68 en-suite rooms plus a bar and restaurant on site.

The host hotel is fully booked for the Aberacon weekend, and the convention says so directly, adding that attendees are welcome to book elsewhere. If you are on the registration waiting list, treat accommodation as a separate problem to solve rather than assuming a room comes with a returned place.

There is no official overflow hotel. The practical fallback is the surrounding Aberavon and Port Talbot area, which has been a seaside resort since the 1940s and carries the usual mix of smaller seafront hotels, guesthouses and apartment rentals along the promenade. Swansea is a short train ride west and has a far deeper pool of accommodation, making it a reasonable base if you do not mind commuting in each morning; Port Talbot Parkway connects the two in about fifteen minutes.

Book early regardless. Late August is peak season on a Blue Flag beach, so the convention is competing with ordinary holidaymakers for the same rooms, and the hotel selling out well ahead of the weekend is the clearest evidence of that.

Plan Your Trip

If Aberacon is your first convention, our first convention survival guide covers the ground the schedule does not, and an event this size is about the gentlest possible place to start. With registration closed and the hotel full, the convention budgeting guide is worth reading for the accommodation section alone, since staying off-site changes the shape of the weekend's costs.

If you are weighing up the UK circuit, ConFuzzled in Birmingham is the country's largest furry convention and roughly the opposite experience in scale, while Furcation sits closer to Aberacon in size and keeps the same small-and-friendly character on the Devon coast.

Notes on Aberacon

3 quirks & policies that don't fit the highlights grid.

  • Bilingual top-to-bottom: Aberacon as a Cymraeg furry con

Aberacon is the only UK furry convention to publish every page of its official site bilingually in English and Welsh (Cymraeg). About, Venue, Travel, FAQs, Mascot, and Policies each carry a full Welsh translation under headings like Lleoliad, Amdanom, and Cwestiynnau Cyffredin, not as a token gesture, but as a parallel reading of the site.

  • Aberavon seafront, a Blue Flag beach as a con venue

The Best Western Aberavon Beach Hotel sits on Aberavon Seafront, the longest beach in Wales and a regular winner of Keep Britain Tidy''s Seaside Award alongside its Blue Flag, making Aberacon the only UK furry convention held on a Blue Flag beach.

  • Cole the corgi (Glo y Corgi), the steelworks mascot

Aberacon''s mascot is Cole the corgi, known in Welsh as Glo (literally coal), with backstory rooted in Port Talbot''s industrial identity. Cole works at the steelworks on the pickle line (a real metalworks term, the acid bath that removes scale from sheet steel), wears permanent safety goggles, and "loves that first daffodil in spring" (Wales'' national flower) and the smell of fresh Welsh cakes.
