How Do I Get to CampFire Tails?

The campground is near La Pine in central Oregon's high desert:

  • Flying: The nearest commercial airport is Roberts Field in Redmond (RDM), about 50 miles north, with connecting flights from major West Coast hubs. Portland International Airport (PDX) is roughly 200 miles north.
  • Driving: La Pine is on U.S. Route 97, south of Bend. From Portland, take U.S. 26 or I-5 to U.S. 97 southbound (about 3.5 hours). From Eugene, take Highway 58 east to U.S. 97 (about 2.5 hours).
  • Note: A personal vehicle is strongly recommended, as the Ogden Group Camp is off-highway in the Deschutes National Forest with no public transit access.

Where Should I Stay for CampFire Tails?

  • Ogden Group Camp: Registration covers your campsite at the group camp. Attendees bring their own tents, sleeping bags, and camping gear. The campground sits on ancient lava flows among high-desert pine forests.
  • La Pine Lodging: For those who prefer a roof, the town of La Pine has motels and vacation rentals, though staying at camp is the intended experience.

Past Years

2026: A Midsummer Night's Shrinking

CampFire Tails 2026 ran June 11-15 at the Ogden Group Camp in the Deschutes National Forest, moving a month earlier than its usual midsummer slot. Registration again used the lottery system (attendee $100, patron $160), and the "Happenings" format let campers host their own activities rather than following a guest-of-honor lineup. The convention had not published an attendance count or a charity total for the year as of early July 2026.

2025: Midsummer Faire

CampFire Tails 2025 hosted 150 campers in the Deschutes National Forest for a medieval-themed retreat. The community raised $11,143 for the Cat Adoption Team.

Notes on CampFire Tails

3 quirks & policies that don't fit the highlights grid.

  • USFS Deschutes National Forest tenure: a third land-tenure model

Campfire Tails operates on United States Forest Service land within Deschutes National Forest. Federal forest tenure sets the rules the convention runs under: a per-site occupancy cap, USFS fire restrictions that can tighten with no notice in an Oregon summer, and no permanent structures. A privately-owned campground would let organisers negotiate those terms; on USFS land they are handed down.

  • Camping on Oregon's youngest lava flows

The campsites sit on Northwest Rift Zone basalt approximately 7,000 years old, and the nearby Big Obsidian Flow (within Newberry National Volcanic Monument) erupted around 690 CE, the youngest lava flow in Oregon.

  • Three-stage lottery with the "+1 designation" payment window

Camp Feral! and Wild Nights run individual-seat raffles for capped attendance. Campfire Tails runs a three-stage lottery with a designated "+1" payment window, distinct from a typical first-come ticketing flow.
