3 quirks & policies that don't fit the highlights grid.
Mandatory masks in the Dealers Den (no exceptions)
MFC enforces a hard mandatory-mask rule inside the Dealers Den that has no analog at most furcons globally as of 2026. The official Conduct & Safety Guidelines spell it out: 'Attendees must wear masks in the den at all times. No exceptions to this rule will be permitted. Any attendee not wearing a mask in the den will be immediately removed and will not be permitted to return to the den.' Mesh masks, neck gaiters, bandanas, and costume balaclavas are explicitly rejected, only properly-fitting masks covering nose-to-chin are accepted. MFC also recommends attendees have received at least two COVID-19 vaccine doses and reserves the right to enforce that as an admissions rule, making MFC one of the very few 2026 furcons still maintaining a public-health-policy admissions stance.
Charity partner brings live rescued birds onsite
The 2026 charity partner is Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue, and the rescue staffs a stall next to the art gallery for the whole weekend. MFC's charity page promises more than a logo on a slide: "On Friday and Saturday, you'll also have the chance to meet some of their feathered friends in person and take some photos! Then on Sunday, they'll be taking the stage for a short presentation immediately before the charity auction." Live rescue birds on the floor, and the rescue's own people telling their story from the stage before bidding opens, make the charity slot a programmed onsite encounter rather than a back-of-program acknowledgement.
Per-year costume guide explicitly rejects real-world cultural imagery
MFC publishes a fresh themed costume guide every edition, and the guide does more than suggest aesthetics, it codifies what is off-limits. The 2026 Tropical Tails guide pushes attendees toward generic resort, cruise, and castaway wear, and explicitly asks them to avoid costumes referencing real-world cultures, religions, or ceremonies, no faux-tribal imagery, no leis, hula skirts, or grass skirts, no ritual items. That clause is enforced as a costume-rule rather than left to vibes, distinct from the Conduct & Safety boilerplate. Pairing a tropical theme with a hard "no cultural appropriation" rider is structurally different from how most theme-driven furcons handle costume policy, which typically defaults to a generic "be respectful" line in the CoC.
