One easy way to create a suit problem in transit is sealing a damp suit inside a case. A closed case with a sweaty suit traps heat and humidity, which can worsen odor and increase the risk of material damage or mold. There is no reliable fursuit-specific deadline after which mold suddenly appears, so treat complete drying as a requirement rather than racing a clock.

Every time you wear a suit it absorbs sweat into the foam, the backing fabric, and the fur base. On a normal day at home that moisture evaporates because the suit hangs in open air. Inside a sealed case it has nowhere to go.
Trapped humidity can let odor develop and can damage materials over repeated cycles. Mold risk depends on moisture, temperature, material, airflow, and time, so a single deadline cannot predict what will happen inside every suit. The smell is a warning sign, but a suit can also hold moisture where you cannot smell it yet.

Give the suit as much air-out time as the construction needs. Hang the body and stand the head somewhere with airflow, and point a fan at both if you can. A fan can shorten drying time and reaches the inside of the head, which often takes longer to dry.
Once it is genuinely dry, complete any between-wear treatment named by the maker care sheet. Do not add powder, fragrance, or an improvised spray merely to mask moisture; residue on a damp lining creates another cleaning problem. Even a dry suit may release a little residual moisture in a sealed case, especially on a long flight. Desiccant can supplement the drying routine, but it does not replace it.
Silica gel packs can buffer limited residual humidity. Use the amount and placement recommended by the product, keep packets away from direct contact with the suit, and do not use them as a reason to pack wet foam. Activated charcoal may help with odor, but it is not a substitute for airflow or drying.
A simple trick for the head: slip it into a large breathable cotton bag rather than sealing it in plastic against the foam. You want the head protected from scuffs but still able to release moisture into the surrounding desiccant, not sweating against a plastic wall.
Vacuum compression bags are tempting because they shrink a bulky body and seal out any moisture that gets into the case. For soft parts, use them only if the maker and the construction allow it, because compression can mat fur or deform padding.
The problem is rigid heads. Compressing a resin or 3D-printed base can crack or deform it, and even a foam-based head can hold a warped shape if it is vacuum-squeezed for a long flight. Use vacuum bags for the body if you like the space savings, but let the head travel loose in its own padded space. Space saved is not worth a cracked base.
The most common mistake happens at the end, not the start. You arrive tired, drop the case in the hotel room, and leave the suit sealed overnight. That is a poor choice because the suit has just spent hours in a warm case and may still hold residual moisture.
Do this the moment you check in:
Reverse the same routine before you fly home. A suit worn all weekend and sealed wet for the return flight needs airflow and drying as soon as possible, not extra fragrance or a tighter case. The full overnight setup, from towel-press to AC-vent staging, is in the hotel-room drying guide.
On long flights, the case sits sealed for most of a day, so give yourself more margin. Make sure the suit went in fully dry, and treat any desiccant as a supplement. A checked case cannot be opened mid-journey, so pre-flight drying matters even more.
