South Afrifur (SAFC) 2026 is scheduled for Aug 7-10, 2026 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The announced theme is Claw and Order. The charity partner is Fallen Angels Pet Rescue.
South Afrifur (SAFC) is a furry convention in the Johannesburg area of South Africa, and the only convention on the African continent that we have documented. Community-run and revived in its modern form in 2017, it has grown steadily while supporting local animal charities.
South Afrifur's 2026 edition runs 7-10 August 2026 under the film-noir theme "Claw and Order": trench coats, fedoras, smoky offices and an unsolved case. The convention's own framing casts every attendee as a private investigator hunting a stolen McGuffin, and it backs that up with an opt-in murder-mystery game run by the in-character SAFCPD, with clues collected across the weekend.
The programme runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the convention describes itself as spanning four days and three nights, so most attendees stay through to the Monday. Registration for 2026 has closed: attendee, sponsor and super sponsor tickets ended on 5 June, and the final weekend passes closed on 29 July.
This year's charity is Fallen Angels Pet Rescue, supported by the convention's annual raffle. Tickets are R20 each, sold from Saturday morning until the Sunday-evening draw, and the money goes toward the shelter's relocation.
⚠️ The convention does not publish its venue name. Its own packing list places the event in Muldersdrift, north-west of Johannesburg, and describes a hotel with on-site rooms, a restaurant, a poolside bar and a backup generator. Recent editions used the Valverde Eco Hotel there, but the 2026 property has not been separately confirmed, so treat the location as Muldersdrift and nothing finer until the convention says otherwise.
South Afrifur is the central gathering point for South Africa's furry community and the wider region, and the only convention on the continent that we have documented. It is deliberately small, a couple of hundred attendees rather than thousands, and community-run rather than corporate.
The format is what makes it distinctive. This is a residential convention at an out-of-town venue, so you sleep, eat and socialise in the same place as the programming, and the weekend has the feel of a long group holiday rather than a hotel takeover in a city centre. Attendees share rooms with people they may not know, socialise around a poolside bar under genuinely dark skies, and eat together between panels.
It is also one of the more thoroughly all-ages conventions on this site. Under-16s attend free when accompanied by a guardian, 16 and 17 year olds are admitted with notarised parental consent, and adult programming is fenced into designated After Dark areas that minors cannot enter. For anyone in or visiting southern Africa, it is the furry date on the calendar.
By air: Johannesburg is served by O.R. Tambo International (JNB), the busiest airport in Africa and the arrival point for most international routes. Lanseria International (HLA) is a smaller alternative and sits considerably closer to Muldersdrift, so it is worth pricing if your route allows it.
By car: the convention is held out of town, north-west of Johannesburg in the Muldersdrift area, and a car or pre-arranged transport is realistically the only practical way in. There is no useful public-transport connection to a venue of this kind, and the convention's own advice describes the site as being "out in the sticks", far enough from the city that the nearest pharmacy or doctor is a drive away.
Practical notes from the convention: plan lifts in advance rather than expecting to arrange them on arrival, and bring cash. Card payments work at the convention and through YOCO at some Artist Alley tables, but smaller traders may prefer cash in hand. Bring a two-pin plug adaptor or multi-plug for South African sockets.

South Afrifur is a residential convention: you stay at the venue, and the ticket tiers reflect that. The convention's packing list tells attendees that clean bedding is provided with a resident ticket, that each room has a kettle, and that there is "a bit of a walk between the event venues and your rooms", which is the clearest published picture of the site. A fully stocked bar operates on site and outside alcohol is not permitted.
Two practical warnings come from the convention itself. Muldersdrift gets cold, clear nights, so a jacket matters even though August is the tail of the southern winter. And load-shedding is a real possibility: the venue runs a generator, but the convention still advises bringing a power bank and a torch, noting that the site is far enough from the city that the walk to the bathroom at night is genuinely dark.
Because the 2026 property has not been named publicly, there is no room block to book independently and no alternative hotel list worth publishing here. Recent editions used the Valverde Eco Hotel in Muldersdrift. The convention's Telegram channel is where venue detail actually lands, so watch it before arranging anything independently.
The modern South Afrifur was revived in 2017, with its first edition drawing around 28 attendees. It has grown over the following years, roughly 125 attendees by 2024, and built a track record of supporting local animal charities, including Husky Rescue Johannesburg. Detailed per-year themes and totals are not consistently published on readable official channels.
